Interesting Books

Hey ho! I'm slowly healing after my short bout of chicken pox! Just waiting to be fully scabbed before I return to work which will hopefully be pretty soon!

Anyways! I thought I would just post some pictures of a couple interesting books I stumbled upon in Waterstones t'other day!



A set of book covers for the Penguin English Library, designed by Coralie-Bickford Smith. I really like these book covers, I like the simple patterns and the subtle colours used throughout the series. Its strange as I think it makes them look modern but old-fashioned at the same time! (If that makes any sense!) I would feel chuffed having these little novels on my book shelf in any case! (If I had any room…) Perhaps one day!

And then, maybe rather oddly, here are some photos of a new modern Bible that I came across whilst in the Edinburgh Waterstones - not sure why I was walking through the religion section, but there ya go!



So yes, I just thought it looked like an interesting take on the Bible - clearly designed to appeal to young people. Its clear bright layout actually made the epic book feel less daunting to pick up and read, plus it had useful timelines detailing when certain stories in the Bible happened; as well as a summary of all the important people featured in the Bible and the Bible's take on issues in the modern world such as politics, abortion and alcohol use.
Although, despite its friendly looking exterior, there are moments in the book in which the text comes off a bit judgemental/preachy towards the reader, which is moderately off-putting when reading the book (thats how it came across to me anyways.)
But yes, interesting design that certainly makes it more approachable to a potential reader!








So theres a bit of waffle for you, and now I'll scurry on back to updating my website/logo whilst watching 'Nothing to Declare' (Its a GOOD show! Give it a watch - strangely watchable!)

LSAD Graphic Arts Degree Show 2012

Heeey everyblobby! I'm scratching my head like a crazy person, as I have appeared to contracted a lovely rash (that I suspect is chicken pox), so whoop!

Anyways! A couple of weeks ago I mosey-ed on down to the Liverpool School of Art & Design to check out their 2012 degree show - in particular to see the what the Graphic Arts class had produced (as I completed my course there about 3 years ago now! How scary is that?)
Here are just a couple of photos of work that caught my eye:






(I particularly liked this illustrative style - lovely and flowing, wish I could draw hair that amazingly!)

(I really liked this work - it made my noggin' think! The designer behind this piece decided to write for 24 hours non-stop and publish the work - but rather than showing everything they wrote, the designer used a font that replaced all letters with blocks - except for 'I', 'me', 'myself', etc etc; and also providing a summary of the topics the designer was writing about. I liked it! It was interesting - it made me want to do it as well!)


(I love watercolours, coupled with shoes makes it all good!)









I would have to say I was a bit disappointed in the lack of animation/interactive work on display in the show, as that was my specialism when I completed the course, but oh wello, perhaps more people are losing interest in it? (As there were not many people tackling animation in my university days!)
BUT, on another note, I really really like the booklet that accompanied the Graphic Arts exhibition! I thought it was printed on lovely paper, and the layout of all the students work looked great on it - taking full advantage of the space!










So there ya go! I had a fun time at the private viewing, and got to see a few people I hadn't seen in a rather long time, which was nice!
I'm afraid the degree show is over now, as I've been a busy bee and not had time to write about it till now! My apologies! But, you can go check out the students' website here: Edition 2012! So go check it out!! Its a really nice website done in the same style as the booklet I was discussing earlier! (I really wish I could remember the proper name for that booklet!

And to say farewell, one picture I took of the one of the pieces at the Fine Art exhibition - I'm pretty impressed with the plumbing system the student set up for this fountain!
